Production and Supplier Decisions Workbook

Evaluate supplier terms, batch variances, special orders and constrained production using the costs and alternatives that actually change.

By PriceAndProfit Editorial Updated

Evaluate supplier terms, batch variances, special orders and constrained production using the costs and alternatives that actually change.

Begin with the decision date. A purchase already made can be relevant to product profitability while being irrelevant to the choice of processing that stock further. Trace incremental cash payments, existing unavoidable costs and displaced contribution separately. The variance guides compare actual inputs with a defined standard for actual output; the decision guides compare future alternatives. Neither calculation automatically determines an accounting treatment or a commercially acceptable quote.

Use the special-order worksheet to reconcile the accepted order with work displaced from the same capacity. For supplier comparisons, separate invoice price, retrospective rebates, additional stock and switching costs. Test quantity, quality and delivery assumptions before treating a lower dollar result as an operational improvement.
