Shipping Cost Calculator
Add a carrier quote, packaging and handling for one order, then compare that total with the shipping amount collected from the customer.
Formula and cost boundary
Shipping cost = packages × (carrier quote + packaging) + order handling; subsidy = cost − customer shipping charge
Enter a current quote for your actual package, destination and service. The tool does not determine carrier rates, zones, dimensional weight or surcharges. For packages with unequal quotes, enter their average quoted carrier cost and average packaging cost. A negative subsidy means customer shipping charges exceed these direct costs; it is not total order profit. Percentage fees on shipping are outside this tool.
Worked example: Two-package order
The following inputs are hypothetical values for checking the calculation. They are not recommended prices, wages, margins or platform charges. Keep the units and period shown in each label when replacing them with your own records.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Carrier quote per package | $8 |
| Packages in the order | 2 packages |
| Packaging cost per package | $1.5 |
| Handling cost per order | $3 |
| Shipping collected from customer | $10 |
| Result | Calculated value |
|---|---|
| Order shipping and handling cost | $22 |
| Cost not covered by shipping charge | $12 |
| Average all-in package cost | $11 |
Using the result
Save the input set alongside the source date of each quote or cost record. Review the cost boundary before comparing this result with another report: a contribution measure may exclude overhead, and a cash measure follows payment dates. Display rounding does not change the underlying assumptions. Recalculate when an input changes; the tool does not predict future sales or collections.
Are any rates supplied automatically?
No. Numeric fields are your inputs. Example values demonstrate arithmetic only. Check your contracts and records for the amounts that apply to your business.
Why might a result be unavailable or negative?
A missing denominator or inconsistent inputs can make the calculation undefined. Those combinations are rejected or labeled explicitly. A valid negative result remains visible because it may identify a loss or cash shortfall.
