Sales Mix Break-Even Calculator
Estimate break-even for a fixed two-product sales mix, with composite baskets, whole-product quantities and revenue at the rounded mix.
Formula and cost boundary
Basket contribution = A quantity × A contribution + B quantity × B contribution; baskets = ceil(fixed ÷ basket contribution)
The basket is a modeling ratio, not necessarily a bundle sold to a customer. Quantities must be nonnegative whole numbers and basket contribution must be positive. One loss-making product can be included if the full basket contributes enough. The result depends on maintaining the entered mix; capacity and independent demand may prevent those sales.
Worked example: Two A for one B
The following inputs are hypothetical values for checking the calculation. They are not recommended prices, wages, margins or platform charges. Keep the units and period shown in each label when replacing them with your own records.
| Input | Example value |
|---|---|
| Fixed costs for the period | $1,000 |
| Product A price | $30 |
| Product A variable cost | $18 |
| Product A units in a composite basket | 2 units |
| Product B price | $50 |
| Product B variable cost | $30 |
| Product B units in a composite basket | 1 units |
| Result | Calculated value |
|---|---|
| Whole composite baskets | 23 baskets |
| Product A units | 46 units |
| Product B units | 23 units |
| Revenue at rounded sales mix | $2,530 |
| Operating profit at rounded mix | $12 |
Using the result
Save the input set alongside the source date of each quote or cost record. Review the cost boundary before comparing this result with another report: a contribution measure may exclude overhead, and a cash measure follows payment dates. Display rounding does not change the underlying assumptions. Recalculate when an input changes; the tool does not predict future sales or collections.
Are any rates supplied automatically?
No. Numeric fields are your inputs. Example values demonstrate arithmetic only. Check your contracts and records for the amounts that apply to your business.
Why might a result be unavailable or negative?
A missing denominator or inconsistent inputs can make the calculation undefined. Those combinations are rejected or labeled explicitly. A valid negative result remains visible because it may identify a loss or cash shortfall.
